Hi,

I am looking for a shop that can refinish my 1969 Camaro front and rear bumpers in Black Chrome.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

77thor,

That's what I thought but most places only do small parts and do not have a tank large enough to do a bumper.

I hate to be redundant, but you can media blast them and work with a powder coater to accomplish what you want. A good powder coater (not a kid working out of his garage) will have an oven large enough and should have "black chrome" as a powder option.

Around here, you would be looking at approx. $50 to media blast the bumper and $100 for the powder coating, so $150 total per bumper.

Thanks for beginning redundant and I will check this option out.
Sometime it take a little more time to sink in :)

Black Chrome is a very hard to preserve surface and is very easily damaged in everyday use.
I would suggest you talk with others that have gone the 'Black Chrome' route - I think you'll be surprised by their comments and find out most would NOT go this route again ... ;)

Powder coating on the other hand is an excellent choice in many cases. It is less expensive to execute and holds up very well in use.
I've seen a few powder coating effects in the past couple of years that looked just like chrome (regular and black) and anodized surfaces - sure fooled me until I got up close to study

If ya can't find anyone in your next of the woods, I know a guy that has a huge oven (does full frame cars).

He is very reasonable and can do all the colors, his chrome would fool you unless up close like John said above.

Heck he's even powder coated deer and steer skulls.

His located in Mt. Victory Ohio, shops name is JB Tubulars and his name is Jeff. I had him do all my bumper brackets, hood hinges, light buckets and other misc. parts.

If yer interested let me know and I will PM you his number and you can call and maybe ask how much and if you can ship them to him.

He basically is a fabricator and makes gates, grooming and head gates and feeders for livestock. A few years back he got sick of shotty powder coating he was getting and decided to do his own, he went all in and bought the very best stuff and built a huge bay/oven.

We've done business with him for years, he is a good guy and will treat ya right. :beers:

Check out some stuff call spectra chrome, its basically some kind of paint process, but it can be applied in just about any color you can mix up, and allegedly it adheres to most any surface pretty well. I would assume that it does chip on a hard surface like a bumper if it gets hit. Not a do it yourself product, you have to find someplace that does it professionally.

You Guys are great!

I am now sold on the getting the Black Chrome powder coating and I am checking local shops first (trying to avoid shipping the bumpers). If I can't find someone here I will reach out and see if one of your suggestions will work out. Thanks again and again everyone.
I will post pictures once it get them done. Right now I am wet sanding all the orange peel down on the whole car to get a smooth and cool. I have ~40 hrs in so far and still have one door and a front fender to do... :)

Mark C or Coupe have it.

Black chrome is such a weak finish, though it looks amazing. It also can contain lead, similar to hypersilver wheel paint, which is no longer available in true form in the US anymore.

The Powder coating with near chrome base, and smoke over the top is the best durable way.

If you want to DIY it, get some good Oracal dark smoke taillight vinyl, and wrap the original chrome...can last a few years, but scratches fairly easily
