Best way to pull a classic car history report or build sheet for a 67 Camaro?

I’m trying to track down the history on a ‘67 Camaro I recently picked up. It’s in great shape overall, but I didn’t get much info from the previous owner—no records, no paperwork, just a title and a lot of guessing.

Is there any solid way to run a classic car VIN lookup on something this old? I’d love to find a classic car history report or even a build sheet if that’s possible. Just want to confirm what it left the factory with and maybe see where it started out.

If anyone’s done this before or knows where to begin, I’d appreciate any pointers. Would be cool to know exactly what I’ve got.

If you haven’t already, punch in the vin on different search engines. My search showed a person on this site had taken a picture of cowl tag. He let me know my car had sold on e-bay and who had sold it from back in about 2006. It takes a lot of work and internet was my best resource. Found original purchaser from 69 and multiple owners from 2006 to current. Have fun it takes time.

A good starting point to your information search, and to try to start collecting some documentation, is to visit this site (link below), pay $60, and you will find out the actual shipping date of your car, the dealer zone it was shipped to, and the actual dealer name and address where the car was shipped to from the factory.

For a 67 a lot can be determined by the cowl tag as to what the car was originally. Start with the link to CRG Roger posted in reply #4 above. Once in the CRG site select the numbers decode button to start your search. You can also post a picture of your cowl tag here and we'll help you decode it but you'll learn for yourself going through CRG.

I found DMVs to be unhelpful, even though I could track my title back to two prior states. They cite "privacy concerns." I was able to identify the original selling dealership (still in business) from the report that I obtained from NCRS (they have many Camaro records). As others have pointed out, CARFAX is no help.

If you can find a copy of “The Conclusive Camaro Recognition Guide”
Volume 1: 1967 to 1969 it will tell you most everything you can find. The VIN# tells you the Model, year, assembly plant and the unit number. If it has an N it’s Norwood plant and an L it’s Los Angeles. The Cowl Tag / Trim Plate on the firewall tells you:
The week and month built,Interior color if Norwood, Model year, interior style, assembly plant, body unit number, interior trim color and type of seating, lower body color, upper body color, accessories and engine type. You just have to decode it. I have a 67’ Camaro 350 SS for 21 years with under 44,000 original miles that I have done extensive research on so I understand what you’re going through! Hope it helps! Also, in one of my books it said there were no build sheets so I wouldn’t look to hard!
