Yeah I barely saw a movie on one of those for the First time about 2 weeks ago, it looked Weird like as if I was watching the Special features / or behind the scenes extras from a DVD .. something was missing But it look unbelieveably clear.

i bought for for my brother in law..I'm using him for a guinea pig. If it's good then I'll get my own!

I also got the Sony BDP-S350, and HDMI cable for my Sony 52" XBR6 LCD. The movies are the best out so far and regular DVD's also look better. Only drawback is the cost of BlueRays.

...seems like the PS3 plays the standard DVDs better as well...
While many DVD's are recorded in "widescreen", NONE are high def!
Hi def is a picture with 720 or 1080 lines, and DVD's by definition are 480 lines, same as conventional television.

All the latest dvd players do "upsampling", reading standard def 380 line dvd's, doing some fake multiplication, and outputtting 1080i (?) to the television.

The Blu-Ray's and PS3's probably (confirm??) do this too.
(would explain why a dvd would look better)

Do these upsampling systems actually work well?
How much better is bluray?
400% better (the price difference)??

The PS3 does up convert DVDs. For those who have one you need to go into the system settings to activate. The PS3 also has wireless so you can use the net.

I see a noticeable difference with Blue Ray.. I think the PS3 is a bargain and got mine when they first came out because they were cheap in comparison to the straight Blue Ray players, had the wireless and gaming.

What he said...Blue ray does make a difference...plus I hear the PS3 is forward compatible, it will play the new formatted Blue ray discs where some of the older Blue-ray players will not...good unit for the bucks...

Hey Ron, or anyone out there tell me about this "Red Ray-Pro Series"? Sounds more like a ray gun?

After Santa brings up that note book, was considering a Blue Ray player in the spring... now there's a "Red Ray"? After reading the posts it seems like a PS3 is the way to go...best of both worlds?

Anybody clarify this for me?

Thanks.

So a question about the PS3 and it's wireless. I have seen that to get the most out of the blue-ray players you nned to have an internet connection to get firmware upgrades and also get the blue-ray disc net fetures that come on some of the discs (I have been reading that will expand to more and more movies soon) with the PS3 being wireless does this become the net connection for the above? Can you access the net with a PS3 and visite Team Camaro, Yahoo, You-Tube, download music.....ect? I know the wirelss has something to do with gaming online. Does it cost you monthly fee for it to go on-line?
I have been looking at blue-ray players and have a hard time not buying the PS3, I know you need to spend something like $30.00 for the remote for it to work though.

Thanks for the input, Joe...still a bit confusing with the upgrades and all... but looks like the PS3 cuts some of the electronic corners.

Up here, there's a spread of about $150 or so between the player and the Game unit. The play stations don't seem to budge in $... but the players have come down dramatically.

Local walmart had blurays for $129.00 on black friday, I had one but later found it was not the full blue-ray 3.0 or what ever they call it for a net connection and getting all the goodies and put it back. The son found out on Cnet had it has the picture quality not very good. I have found the looking on Cnet gives me some good info but I am still in the dark about the PS3 and what it can really do.
If it can do all of what I asked above the $150.00 or so it well worth the price since I will not have to run a com line to my system (I might want to anyway?) In a way I sort hope it does then the excuse to buy one is a REAL GOOD ONE!!
The little woman wants a Wii though, so do I they look like lots of fun and we have played before and it's a real hoot!! The Golf game is real fun, so is bowling. She has done the Wii fit and loved it, said it made her work out really fun and it went twice as long. I can't complain she keeps the muscles tight in all the right places  maybe a wii will be better than a blue ray at the momment :D

I've had one about a year now. Sony BDP-S300. Still amazed by the picture.

I tried my hardest to get Santa to have one of these under the Christmas tree.

I don't think I was good enough, since its not there.

I guess I will just have to accidentally have one fall into my shopping cart at best buy or something.

Joe I will use the PS3 to go on line to watch videos /you tube and instead of them being on little computer screen they are on my big screen. The IMDB -Internet Movie Database has a lot of the shows on-line so I just watched a few of the Friday Night Lights episodes on line which saved me 40 bucks because I did not have to go by the season on DVD .

PS3 automatically updates the software when updates area available which is about once every three weeks or so. You can also load you camera memory sticks into the PS3 . My brother wanted to see one of my cars so I put in the memory stick and now you are looking at a crisp picture the size of your TV and you can zoom in to specific areas of the photo.... you can also get a wireless keyboard but I use the hand held controller when I use the net.

You can also use a wireless ear piece or head set and play the games on line against others... my brother and I will play Tiger Woods golf every once in a while on line and at the same time get caught up n our lives , or just talk smack while I am kicking is backside ...

So it surfs and plays also!! Does it cost you a monlty fee to play games with bro? This is really swaying my choice......but I think a wii is our future if you know what I mean ;) it's muscle thang

Joe, there is no fees to play online like an x box, I run mine wireless thru a linxis router.
The online gaming is just plain cool, I can spend hours blasting away at folks from all over the world and you can use a bluetooth ear piece to talk and cordinate your stratigies, which is really cool on the call of duty multiplayer games.
Another nice feature is also the wireless controllers.

If I had a choice between the BlueRay and the new RedRay "Pro" series, I think I'd rather wait till next summer when the GreenRay "Magnum Plus" will be available!.....This unit is so cool that you don't even have to be near it to enjoy it and the best part is it's all mind control operational!!:thumbsup:
