What kind of rivets or fasteners should I use to install the original VIN tag on my new cowl. I doubt the original ones are still available, right?

Someone has the original rosette style rivets but I cannot remember who, but we just use regular rivets. We're trying not to pull anything over on anyone when we replace a dash top, and they go in upside down anyway, the the ugly side of the rivet is what you see if you look under the dash pad. Unless it is 67 then that is a entire different story as the vin is in the door jam and the rivets show.

Hemmings might be a place to look for original rivets

VIN or Trim Tag? The rivets pictured above by Ron are for the TT. Did you mean the TT on your cowl of the VIN on the dash top?

Wasn't there a VIN number stamped inside the lower cowl somewhere from the factory? I looked on the original cowl but couldn't find it. Any specifics as to where it would be located? I'd like to cut it off before I throw the piece away.

THere are TWO locations that have hidden vins stamped into them.

  1. just below the heater blower motor hole on the pass side tulip box
  2. on top of the inner cowl assembly just to the right of the center on the top surface. You'll have to remove the cowl panel to see it.
Check my thread for pics. I went through the same things....
