I bought this 69 Camaro and I am not sure what the engine is besides a 350. This is a pic of the casting number of the head on the engine.

I do have 8mm wires and HEI.

I've tried shorty plugs NGK 5728 BMR4A. They have a 3/4 inch base instead of 5/8s as normal plugs. I cannto get them to SEAT because the 3/4 inch socket won't go in far enough on the head.

I pulled the AC DelcosR45TS and they look a bit sooty or rich. I was going to reinstall them but I'd like to know what other choice I have. I'd like to find a shorty plug, with a 5/8 inch base but also does the REACH go far enough into the combustion chamber on these heads?????

The Hooker Headers are causing me a lot of grief and I really don't want to change them out at this time.

Please give me a PLUG NAME AND NUMBER that will work in my situation. Not necessarily what works in yours, unless you have the same as what I am dealing with.

Thank you,
Rob aka AZ
PS: Can someone make out the 2nd stamping or cast number on the head please???

I did find this info on the small bloack Chevy Cylinder heads webiste: Years made, cast number, engine size, intake, and exhaust.

An HEI ignition system, vs a points system, DOES NOT dictate the spark plug heat range, compression ratio/pressure and other tuning factors do.
I can't supply info I don't have. The previous owner passed away and took all that with him.

The engine is not the OEM stock 350. It looks like something from the late 70s to early 80s.

From my research it appears these heads are "crap" with cracking issues due to heat. I'm just trying to sort out the issues and gathering what info I can. I'm not prepared to make any big changes until I get things sorted. I just want to get it running and drive able and reliable and then try to ascertain what modifications fit in my budget, Thanks.

I don't have the funds at the moment to buy a nice set of headers that fit. I am trying to work around these, with heat sox, and shorty plugs and shortened spark plug wires.

All I know is, I HATE HOOKER HEADERS. There, I feel better now.

i have hooker super comps on my raised port heads. passenger side i can do in 15 minutes or less. drivers side about 1 hour just on #5 and 7. i welded a 1/4" drive socket into a 3/8" drive 5/8" socket and this helps very much. also cut down a regular 5/8 socket and ground flats to use an open wrench.3/8 hose is handy for instillation. hope this helps

I just bought a 3/4 spark plug socket to "TRY" to install the shorty plugs. I believe you have the angled plugs and mine are straight.

Thanks for the tips, and yes I was using a 1/4 to 3/8 insert to try to use the 1/4 rachet. Nothing seemed to work, and the constant dropping of the plug onto the floor was NOT music to me ears. But at least I got my bend over exercises done for the year. I do have a magnet tool to reach the plug that somehow ALWAYS stops rolling in the middle of the car.

Thanks again for the pics.

DID I MENTION I HATE HOOKER HEADERS??????????????

I have used an offset box end wrench in some instances…..I’ll admit it is a little boring to have to change wrench positions so many times.
There automobiles with far worse spark plug access.
Going through fender wells, from underneath…🙄

I've tried to look at every possibility from standing on my head, flipping the car upside down (thats a lie) to fenderwells,
to hiring my great grandson at union wages to change the plugs out. But then he will want a tip on top of that.

I’ve thought about that for various tasks, but my grandkids only push buttons, except a couple of the boys 👍
Well I’m sure you will persevere, and whether it a crows foot wrench or a socket or Harry Potters wand you’ll find a way 👍

Well I have 6 shortys in. I had to quit. My language was getting atrocious. Words I never heard before were coming out of my mouth. My neighbor is coming over tomorrow, he's a pastor, maybe he can pray the last two in. ;):giggle:
