hello all,

I recently purchased a 1968 Camaro that has already had some modifications done to it. It was a drag car for years and has been tubed, has new suspension all the way around and disc brakes. I do plan on updating the front and rear suspension here again soon with the ridetech kits if that helps at all too. But I purchased a new set of wheels, I’m hoping to run 17x8 in the front and 17x9 in the rear. I was hoping I could get any advice going forward with tire sizes. I want something that will be great for performance with no rubbing hopefully but also still have an aggressive look. Any advice will help, thank you.

Tons of info on this site about tire fitment. Try the search bar, there is hours of reading.

I still run 15s, but have not ruled out a set of 17s or 18s to change the look up when wanted. From my notes on 17s, most common size is 245/45 front and 275/40 rear. All my notes are based on internet info and I have not looked at any cars in person closely to see what they run.

Welcome to the site, post over in the introduction section with a pic of your car. :)

I bought a set of the vision 141 5s. It’s just something temporary for the time being to get me on the road. The fronts (17x8) have a backspacing of 4.5 I believe. The rears (17x9) have a backspacing of 5. I do have free returns with these wheels luckily incase they don’t work but that’s only if I don’t mount them of course.

Backspacing is a little on the shallow side. Any more than 235/45R17 front you'll likely have rubbing issues.

The rear will depend on whether it's been narrowed along with the tub. If it's still stock width, max would be 255/45R17. Looking at current wheel lip depth (and the fact you have 28x12.5 tires) it seems like it has been narrowed. But the widest recommended for a 17x9" rim would be a 275/40R17.

Running 17's on my 68...

Fronts - 17x8, 4.5" backspacing
Tires - 235-45-17

Rears - 17x9.5, 5.5" backspacing
Tires - 275-40-17

2" drop frt and back, no rolled fenders, no tubs, original 12 bolt, 4 wheel disk brakes (Wilwood)

... no rubbing anywhere.

Sometimes a bit of extra negative camber in your alignment will help prevent front rubbing

Like Fbody has advised, take as many measurements as possible by mounting your rim without a tire. Jack up the back of the car under the rear end so it is at ride height and see what kind of space you have. A 275 width tire will not leave much space within the stock fender (outer and inner) so the rim will need to be centered in the available space quite accurately. The total width of my 275 tire is right at 10.5" (sidewall to sidewall) when mounted to my 9.5" rims.
I know this works with a 2" drop
(Hotchkis 1.5" springs and 1/2" blocks) and the stock width 12 bolt rear...
