I need full quarters and did a search here to see everyones opinions on the repops but most of the post was older before the retooling . I would like to know if anyone has put any of the new stock on and how was the fit and what brand ? tempted to buy the NOS ones but wife would kill me plus that would blow the whole budget for the year . thanks for any help and pics would be appreciated .

I have Golden Legion quarters on my '69 and I can complain about the pass side only. The lines and outer contours are nice and crisp/accurate, the gauge is great, the EDP coating was nicely done, but just about every seam on it needed to be re-worked (check my photobucket account or build thread to see what I had to go through to make it fit everywhere)... BUT--- I have read that most pass side quarters will require more than just a test-fit to make it fit and look right. For some reason, the manufacturers pretty much nailed it on the driver's side quarters, but not the pass sides (yet)... Maybe never will? not sure...
With AMD quarters, I have only heard good things; and no known issues on the pass side (that I have heard of or read about). Going with NOS, in my opinion, will only give you a little more resale value(if that's a concern) and some bragging rights...otherwise, they too will need some massaging to fit right. I've seen it in person. Hope this helps. Others will post too I'm sure...

Just about every aftermarket panel,is not going to fit correctly. They will all need work one way or another, the good side is that you ont have any rust issues, the bad is that they will require alot of work to fit correctly. You will have to cut and trim ,bend and twist.and you will still have to skim coat the entire panel to get really nice. If your paying a quality bodyman, expect to pay 6-8 hundred per side, plus materials

Buy an NOS RH quarter for $900-1K. The RH quarter stampings suck. D.corn and G. Legion. Unless you get AMD quality substantiation.

Last autumn, non AMD: Contour incorrect at rear bumper/tailpanel, needed extensive mods. GM door upper bumper did not contact quarter jamb, required .375" mod. Quarter window top inconsistent and much higher than door. Trunk weatherstrip area stamping awful; I grafted in the old quarter's gutter area. Rear window channel too shallow. Astro door vent in wrong location, Door jamb reinforcement recesses poorly stamped, lack definitiion and shallow. Wheelwell contour incorrect (where the molding sits in the radius). Wheelwell flange too narrow, needed material added. Lower door jamb too short, needed extension. The stock was placed in the press wrong thus justifiying the material to one side, which resulted in shortness.

LH G.L. quarter fit fine with only slight trunk weatherstrip area mod. Typical edge definition lacking, no big deal.

I've been doing this for over 20 years, don't mind metal mods and expect them, but the RH was ridiculous. Aftermarket quarters are not heavy guage unless AMD. A friend has ordered an AMD RH quarter because his others sucked too. I am awaiting product evaluation. Because AMD is heavier guage, you are better off anyway, even if the fitment is not perfect. Never expect a panel to be perfect either.
NOS sheetmetal does not always fit well but will not be nearly as bad as a RH repro (unless AMD possibly). I've hung NOS quarters that fell on the car, but they were good stampings. The NOS RH fender the customer gave me needed the lower portion modified for correct rocker mating.

I'd suggest telling the vendor he will eat the return shipping if the panel is garbage. And don't believe him if he says it's good. I returned quarters to Ground Up no questions asked and a different vendor insisted his were better. Only the LH on was, his RH was garbage. The labor to repair the repro quarter exceeds the cost of NOS. Matt's Classic Bowties was running a special on AMD quarters,$389 shipped. Another vendor wanted $515 shipped. So shop around.

AMD guage is heavier than others. Not sure how anything less than factory gauge is great. I don't find working with thin guage material an asset. EDP, whether good or not is meaningless, it has to come off anyway. Unless you are in the collision business.

jegs has amd for 399. the nos quarters i have found are 1500 each which i would love to have but that is a pretty large amount to get past wife
AMD offers both good and bad quarters and Jegs was selling the lower quality ones and that price is no bargain. "X" denotes the lower quality. Better double check. Recently saw an NOS quarter for $950 but did not last. Keep looking. Price I listed above from Matt's was for the better quarters.

I really wish i could have gotten this car before someone else attempted to put quarters and a tail panel in it I wouldve left as much of the perimeter of the quarter as possible but they cut the whole 80% quarter out .

I installed AMD quarters on both sides of my 68. fit was good right side actually fit better than the oe quarter at the taillight panel.i assume they are the new tooling as i bought and installed them early last year.i have pictures of the fit on here somewhere. Dave

Rick, For quarter panels, the retooling of which you speak, is going to apply to
AMD only I believe. It is not so much a retooling as it is, this is their product
produced with new tooling, as AMD did not produce any quarter panels prior that
I am aware of anyway. They did however market someone else's quarter's.
Those are designated by "X" in the part number. I have not seen or heard of any
other's. If there are other's that have retooled, the only way you will know is by
comparing old with new side by side. The vendors/suppliers will most likely not
scrap out the older panels and would continue selling the old and new. CHL does
have a newly tooled tail panel that is of very good quality. Heavier gauge and
crisp lines. I went through 2 OER's before learning of the CHL.

i have put 6 sets on over the years ,all 69 & 1 67 they all sucked at the tail pan or the door jambs.i just put a set in a 69 along with a tail pan the fit was as good as a set of gms i put on back in the late 80's.they were the new amd's.good thick metal & a super nice fit at tail pan.now a buddy bought a set of the amd's & he liked to never got them on the car.he had problems getting them to pull in at the bottom & around the tail pan he used a come along to to pull them in.it was a _ itch.i think he welded quarter in to high & twisted it.the amd's are super thick & you can weld them without burn threw.i will never use nothing but amd's from now on.i have used goodmark & golden legion & they were _ell to get on,not vendor bashing but they were awe full my opinion.

either way its going to be a big job! nos panels will cost more, but will save in time and headaches, aftermarket parts are very flimsey and warp under very little heat. without alot of work and manipulation,a good eye can always spot a repop part.the new metal is very contaminated, and does not weld as well

I bought my AMD quarters from Matts Classic Bowties also.they fit well and because i only live 45 minutes away from them i was able to inspect them first. They are good people to deal with.you could also check with Belair Bobs also. Dave

I bought the AMD after comparing them side by side to several other brands. Very definate improvement in lines and stampings. For example, where the panel reaches into the trunk the bends are much sharper and closer to original. This also applies in the door jamb and fitment around the tail panel. Both are superb.

I have several pics of these quarters here

FYI, I was so impressed with the AMD quarters that I waited a full year just so I could get their full trunk pan. It is also very nice but only about 10-15% better in my opinion. However ALL of their panels are noticably heavier than their compettitors equivilent due to the heavier guage steel. The quarters are 7-8 lbs heavier, each. The trunk pan was maybe 4 lbs. heavier but easy to tell the extra weight when you pick it up and then immediately pick up another brand.

Just installed 67 dynacorn quarters. Rh almost fell on with exception on minor rework around trunk jamb, and striker bolt hole off about 1/4 hole. Did have to square up all the edges, but fit was decent. Lh was another story, trunk are way off, will require cutting and moving, and lots of tweaking to get it to fit. On a brighter note, new 68 door shells fit nice as well as roof panel with minor tweaking.

getting ready to do a 69. We will see how that goes.
